    Default How to knot legs

Had a quick look for videos on You-biquitous-Tube for any videos on how to knot pheasant tail fibres for Daddy / Hopper legs but I've blanked so far.
    Can anybody help?

You can use a dubbing needle, but a better way is to use a fly holder.
Or you could just buy them knotted

Sit still and watch the river, it's all a part of fishing.

I use a fine pin/needle in which I have bent a very small hook to catch and pull the end through. Once the loose knot has been formed it can be moved up and down before tightening in the desired spot.

Its a ****** of a job and nowerdays I tend to knot them in pairs and use two pairs on each side depending on the pattern. I have spent over an hour this evening knotting dyed red PT fibres and I have done about 25 pairs.

I would be intrested to hear tips and advice from others but I think it's mainly a matter of practice and patience.

There is a tool available to help but I have never used one. My little hook in the end of an acupunture needle is the best I have come up with.

Fine rubber strands picked out of black elastic or bungee cord is easier to knot but nothing looks as good as the real thing on a fly IMO.

    Good luck.

A vote for tweezers from me

I also prefer to knot them up before hand like Tupps did in batches of 20-30 or until i get cramp in my fingers.

I do them by removing the fibre first and holding the tip, push the thick(stiffer) end through the knot.
I only do small batches at a time but if I was in need of a load I would buy the feckkers.

Me too G, I find this quick and easy and you get the knot where you need it. Maybe just me but i think the closer you can get the knot to the tip, the better. The bought ones always have the knot too far down the fibre for me, i think youd be as well without a knot in this case as i dont think it will form any part of the profile the fish see. I sit and do a coupke of feathers at a time and those last me ages, never timed myself but it dont take me much more than an hour a feather. If you sit down and just go for it, youd be surprised at how quick you will get.

I think Im going to train up my young daughter and then offer to pay 1 a full feather that should be more than enough or do you think that is too much
I tie them just the same way as Graham, and have just this morning been handed a full carrier bag of feathers which may inspire me to get a batch done for over the winter months.
