Well here's the photo of the flies.

I can do a step by step but not until I get my new place hooked up to the net.

    Cheers
    Alan.

Wonderful! Thanks to all, especially to Alan B for the photo which reveals the details of Bob's Bits. I see that there is room for variation, as in many patterns - wing of hackle fibers or hackle tip, hackle palmered or only at head of fly, slight variations iin dubbed body. Excellent. Now I can confidently tie and use the fly here. Other famous UK flies have performed well in my local streams. I don't doubt that this one will join their ranks.

    Bless you ten-thousand times!

    Bill

Bogs Bits was originally a dry fly for the midland reservoirs. I'd be interested to know how you get on with them on a stream.

I did those in Claret but you can change the colour it is another variable. This was what I had on hand materials wise I had the materials to tie it in black as well but thought this may show the details better.

    Cheers
    Alan.

Alan, I thought the idea was to trim the bottom of the hackle to make it sit

Maybe but that wasn't the case on the ones I saw. Like I say I'm no expert I have only seen a couple that I was told where tied by Bob Worts, I have no reason to doubt they, where but it wouldn't be the first time I've been given duff gen.

    Cheers,
    Alan.

    Greetings Alan,

I tied a few samples of Bobs Bits this afternoon then my wife and I visited a favorite, quite small trout stream this evening. I'd like to report that I "danced" with several brook trout on the fly, but I didn't. Fish also did not respond to a CDC and Elk nor to Klinkhammers. My wife took two on a little, fairly nondescript wet fly (Do you remember the tan and olive yellow partridge soft hackle introduced by Berlin a year or two ago? It's wonderful!)
I will continue to try the Bobs Bits but I fear it's time to move away from the streams and head for the lakes. The stream temperature this evening was 70 degrees F. Time to stop stressing little finny beauties.
FWIW, the Bob's Bits seems to me a fair imitation of the Isonychia bicolor that have been hatching. Accepted hatchmatchers are the White-Gloved Howdy and the Mahoganyy Dun.

Again, thanks very much for your most generous assistance. Indeed, thanks to all who responded.

    Bill

Found this in an old copy of Troutfisherman I have been given. (December 2003)

Bob's Bits; Number 43 in the top 50 greatest flies ever.

I can't tell you what the number one fly is, this issue only has numbers 50 to 21. The F-Fly is at number 47.
