Thread: Fly tying vice

    Default Fly tying vice

Hi people, relatively new to fly fishing and tying.
I've tied a few flies on a cheap vice made with poor quality metal and now the jaws are wearing.
Could anyone recommend a better quality vice with a budget of around 100?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

If you buy an Atlas Apex you won't go far wrong. They retail around 98.

Anvil vices are good - I have the atlas which is full rotary but the apex uses the same jaws. They are really solid.

It depends if you want rotary or not. if not the scottie vice gets some good reviews on here

I did see one post about the jaws being soft but I'm pretty sure the maker replaced the vice as soon as he found out.

for a full rotary you could look at the Danvice

It has a reputation of breaking the jaws but only if you don't adjust it when needed.

Also Carimore vices have been betting some good posts recently if memory serves

Thanks for those suggestions, i will have a look at these.
I'd sooner buy something on the recommendation of people who have used a particular vice rather than sales spiel.

In that case I can vouch for the anvil vices, built like tanks. Only thing I would say is think carefully about buying the apex. As I say the jaws are great but just be sure you don't want a full rotary before you buy, if you do then its worth spending the extra for the atlas, at least then you won't want to upgrade again for a while. As I said I have the atlas and to be honest I rarely use the full rotary function but when I do its a godsend. If I could be bothered to get used to using the rotary properly then I have no doubt that I would find it almost indispensable.

Maybe a little late with my contribution to this thread, but another + from me for the Anvil vices, well pleased with a solid, reliable piece of kit. I have the Apex.
2019 & it will be time for a change.

Another vote for the Anvil vice, I have both an Apex & an Atlas, well made & reliable must have tied a fair few thousand flies on mine everything from 14`s right across the range to 2/0 saltwater streamers. The only comment I would make is (with all vices) I would like a bit more height on the stem (or an extension piece as an optional extra).

Anvil vice seems very popular amongst you all, think it may be worth paying the extra for the Atlas.
