Thread: New Vice Time

    Default New Vice Time

    Hi all

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, did not know if this or tackle would be better.

I'm after a new vice, will be used for everything from Pike flies down to size 20 midges and I'm looking to spend about 100 on it.
    Any one have any suggestions?

    Thanks

An Atlas Anvil will do the job.

I recently went through the same process with roughly the same budget. I too went for the Atlas. Review here:

At the end of it there's also a video review by a Yank that's pretty useful.

Anvil atlas all the way, cracking bit of kit. Had mine for years and still going strong with heavy use 👍.

If it's not a full rotary you're after, the Anvil Apex will be just as reliable & has the same build quality as the Atlas.
2019 & it will be time for a change.

I had an Anvil Apex for years and tied endless amounts of flies on it with no problems. Some people have had issues with the Jaws however, but they are guaranteed and will send replacements if the worst happens.

For me, yes they are worth it. I'm still getting used to using the rotary function properly rather than just to check the back or sides of the fly but when I force myself to use the rotary function to actually dress the fly then its always a help. With me the issue is that I spent so many years using a non rotary vice that I tend to fall into my old ways and not to use the vice to its capability.

As far as the Anvil vices go I have the Atlas and its great - Only issue is that it didn't come with a bobbin holder which I think should be automatic for a rotary vice.

Another you could look at is PWW Designs rotary or their Scottie vice (which looks like it should cover all sizes of hooks.

I'm glad I got a rotary because I now use it all the time, but you certainly don't need it so it's really up to you whether it's worth it.

The vice is going to last a lifetime - there's really no need get another one so I'd say it's worth about a gallon of beer ;-).

But the title is ' new vice time'. Only the most hair-shirted of our members don't go through a fair few vices. How else could we hold such passionate opinions without a fair bit of sampling?
