Default UV Hare's Ear Kate McLaren

One of my first ever Kates, looking forward to giving it a try.

Used black hare's ear because I can't dub seal's fur for ****! Also furnace hen for the front hackle as I didn't have anything else.

Any tips on dubbing seal's fur?

Lick your fingers, use very little at a time and hold the thread tight with your non dubbing hand when dubbing on the seals fur, once you've wrapped a couple of turns twist the dubbing again. Hope that helps

Nice mate 👍, nothing wrong with that Kate. The only tip I can give is dubb small amounts at a time, you shouldn't need to lick your fingers as the natural oils from your fingers should be enough.

You don't need to lick your fingers, I don't, but it does help when your struggling to get the seals fur on the thread.

    Cheers Arkle,

Having read that I have a feeling that the seals fur I've been trying to use is that under the category of "a dog to work with".

I have two bags, one from lathkill and one from cookshill.. both are like bags of pubes. The hairs are all fairly long and spring away from the thread as soon as I try to catch them in.

Any idea where I could get some softer stuff from to compare? Might just be my lack of skill, but I'm not convinced!

Good quality seals fur is getting difficult to get, even Veniard's are having problems these days. The best I've EVER used, in 40+ years of tying both as a hobbyist & semi-pro is from castlefeathers on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEALS-FUR-...4XgFGsq1eGzFJA

Not worth starting a new thread so thought I'd ask here..

What sort of boxes do you use to store your classic wet flies to take on a fishing trip?

I've got a spare split silicone fly box but think that this will crush a lot of the palmered hackles.

I'm putting a selection of flies together for a hill loch wet fly session sometimes soon
