Default Does jungle cock lead to more fish ?

Does anyone think that using the jungle cock eyes insteaf of say goose biots makes that much of a difference to the trout. Has anyone caught more on a pattern with JC than the same pattern without ? Is it worth the 100 + for a cape?

    No.
Although if it adds to your confidence in the fly it might add a fish or two to your bag.
The obvious answer to this if you don't have a spare 100 knocking about is to learn to be confident in flies without it, don't believe the hype

It does still look nice though

I dont think it makes much difference to how a pattern fiahes really myself. I use goose biots which I feel do the job perfectly well. I just thought I would see if anyone felt differently and what their evidence/logic was for thinking that JC on flys will out fish the same patterns with out. I will probably cave next year and buy some but that will be to please my eye rather than the trout hahahah.

Bought a JC cape about 20 years ago, hardly used. Sea trout haven't noticed I've omitted them, but then again, it is dark.

You'll not catch owt ever if you don't use it, the trout know you know.

If it "floats your boat" to have cheeks on a fly then there's nowt wrong in using biots. I doubt very much that a hungry fish will have read the recommended tying recipe.

Old hotspot thing like using a bead or gold head.

I have to say that I feel that most sea trout flies without JC look a little naked to me, but the fish probably don't mind. Confidence plays an important role in sea trout fishing so I would rather fish with a fly that looks complete to me. If you read James Waltham's excellent sea trout fishing books, his firm belief is that some kind of eyes on a sea trout fly makes a big difference, so if he's right, JC has significant value. He takes flies that don't call for JC such as the Medicine Fly and adds small dumbell eyes and on other flies paints an eye at the head - he claims that the eyed versions outfish the same patterns tied with no eyes. I suppose that JC is unlikely to put off a fish so provided you're prepared / able to fork out the money for a cape, there's a chance that you're bettering your odds by using it!

I'm a JC fan, I think it "lifts" just about any fly , and some patterns just don't look right to me without it. No need to spend 100 on a perfect cape though.25 for a cape full of splits is the most I've spent. Goose biots don't give me the feelgood factor that I get with jungle cock, so not for me.

BTW, I'm not a "magic fly" guy by any stretch,... presentation or what you are doing with the flies is far more important than the fly itself IMO. However having said that, I would never underestimate the power of confidence in a pattern.
