Last question, does the hook ping out of the vice, especially hooks below size 18? Am assuming not with the stainless jaws or the midge jaws. The vice seems to have a lot of fans all over the place from what I have read online. I had an Indian vice years ago and lost a few hooks that were sent flying out of the jaws!

I use the Regal Stainless Steel Medallion, have done since '14. Love it, simple, classic and functional. It will tie a 32 if you want !

The great thing about it is when only tying a few flies in different hook sizes (like me most of the time) - there are no adjustments to make with collets or anything, just squeeze and go. Hooks do not move !

Stonfo Kaimen is a good cheaper alternative, but you need King Kongs grip to squeeze the lever, and the work 'area' around the jaws is not as svelte as on my Regal SS.

Iron lotus, you didn't lose hooks because the strength of the jaws pinged them out of the vice at speed , no?

If you seat the hook correctly in the jaws you will avoid pinging hooks and/or chipping the point of the jaws. It really is first rate....sitting tying on it as I type this !
