I like this one. (its one of mine but lacks a name)

Short Shank hook 12 or 14 (to give wide gape)

    Tie in black silk,
Tie in a piece of black foam at the rear of the hook, 2mm foam is perfect
I shape mine to a fat figure of eight with the head bit smaller than the back
Tie in two strands of Black Flashy material ( Crystal flash is good) projecting rearwards.
Wrap the body with a black/green glister dubbing, Lite Brite works well and there are many others
Take silk to mid section and pull foam forwards, Tie in with two tight wraps.
Pull Flash material over foam tightly to divide the back into wingcases.
Lift front section and move flashmateiral so it is underneath the foam and out of sight and projects over the eye.
Tie off front section of foam at head.
Arrange the two strands of flash to form antennae , trim to length
    Whip finish

    Job Done!

    Cheers

Not sure if this is the best pattern for you - but the instructional videos I find helpful as a beginner tying - and these did work on my local water in the autumn.

we get a huge hatch of Coch Y Bonddu beetles around the middle of June in Wales. The best imitation I've seen is by Gwilym Hughes:

Fly Dressing (scroll down approx 1/3 of the page)

if you leave out the Raffia from the dressing you will have the most realistic black beetle pattern you are ever likely to see.

Stephen, tie in a strip of foam a pinch of seal fur and pull your foam over the back tied down and finish, trim the foam at the head and there you go.the simple patterns are often the best.

Ive tried adding hackle were you catch foam at front for legs but they seem to prefer it without
