    Default Bucktail Slider/Popper

Another reasonably easy fly to tie for late Summer/early Autumn Pike.

Hook - Fulling Mill 2/0 Pike Hook
    Thread - Fine mono
Tail/wing - Bucktail in yellow, orange and black.
    Hackle - Yellow hen
Head - Rainy's Yellow Saltwater Popper Med

    (apologies for the fingernails!!)

Catch in the mono at the rear of the hook. Make about 10 turns toward the bend then back again. Secure this with superglue.

Select some long fibred bucktail in Yellow.

Holding the bucktail and hookshank at the same time, wind on a couple of gentle turns, gradually tightening as you move toward the eye. This ensures the bucktail fibre does not flare too much.

...remembering to check the point at which to stop tying the wings!

Follow the procedure above and ad a wing of orange. A cauterizer can help neaten things up.Trim to a taper and give a drop of varnish....

Add your third and final black bucktail wing (the addition of a few strands of flash between wings can also be applied). Again, trim and varnish.

    Select two large yellow hackles.

Trim away the fluff at the base and catch in both feathers at the same time.

Catch the tips with hackle pliers and wind forward 4 or 5 turns, catch in and trim the tips. This doesn't have to be perfectly neat.

wind on a base of mono between the hackle and hook eye. Add a spot of superglue.

Whilst the glue is wet, slide on your popper head. Here I have put it on 'slider' style. To create a popper, you would slide on with the concave 'face' towards the eye. (If you are using Plastazote foam block for your heads, create the hole for the hook by pushing a heated needle through the foam).

The final stage is to add eyes/colour/patterns as required.

    Tight lines,

    Dougie

Looks like a great fly. I've boung some popper heads recently for fun in the salt. I maybe tie one or two like this for the pike too.
