If someone only has say a #7 rod but knows what he is doing then surely he has a bit more of an egde over someone that doesnt know but with loads of gear.

I have a fair amout of coarse fishing tackle and when i used to fish matches some of the tackle some of the guys had was unbelievable and sometimes i came out better then them as i have alot of experience and know what im doing.

You are quite right. You can have all the gear in the world, but if you don't know how to use it, then you are going to get outfished.
The most valuable piece of your arsenal is knowledge. Some of the best anglers I've met fish with 'cheap and old' tackle

If im in a comp i dont worry about the amount of gear the chap next to me has! just how im using mine.
If he has 30 lines so what! he can only use one at a time.

Exactly, but an expert angler with 30 fly lines has an advantage over an expert angler with only 4.

I could enter then Apart from the humour I believe there are lots of rules especially on flies restricted sizes no artificial weight etc etc ,I would rather see you be allowed most types of fly and restrict you to say 3 lines one floating(includes midge tips) one intermediate,and one sinking the angler would need to declare their 3 line types on the day this would make people think about the strategies to employ based on what they see on the day, type of water fished, and possible weather changes throughout the day,would get a few thinking!

anyway,I thought the no Drougue rule was stupid in Scotland (allowed in England/wales),so I went to the meetings and opposed it for several years.they are now allowed.So if you and Neil.want to get some rule changes imposed.do the same as me and put your head above the parapett at AGM's(you have to be a member mind you )

Fair points Jim, I would say that the ref only sends someone off if they have broken the rules though.

Re. blowing off steam, I'm really not trying to wind anyone up with this thread but am genuinely interested in folks views on something that's puzzled me for a long time.

Is that not what a forum is for Jim ? To put across your thoughts and feelings about certain aspects of fishing ? Obviously it is for other reasons of which I am aware. I dont believe for one second that BD is being anti competition fishing and only think he is asking a few questions which he is completley intitled to do. This coming from someone who is very interested in competition fishing

I think that is a fair point as you have to find the trout rather than putting bait in the water to make the fish come to you, but then you could have all the lines in the world but if the fish are not there you aint catching them.

I myself only have 3 line floating, inter and sinking as i fish more different places i will get some more, but for me im just happy to cast a line if i catch i catch if i dont well you get the drift.

Biggest restriction for the more prestigious competitions ie national selections, in scotland are the ones that state you have to be a member of a club, and therefore nominated to fish competition by said club!
when will open qualifier/competition mean open?
