Doesn't work. When I joined the army, during basic training which was over winter, doing weapons drill was hard to say the least. We all came up with the ingenious idea of using deep heat on our hands before we went out. Came to the conclusion that there aren't enough muscles in the hands for deep heat to take effect. It was a long cold winter that year.

Myself and the other veterans from Gardening Leave are fishing today. Been snowing all night. Now the other veterans are still relalively new to fly fishing and will fish no matter what, I can see myself sitting in the cabin most of the day watching them. I love fly fishing but not that much

Yeah it's difficult to enjoy when you are in pain with cold biting on the fingers.
Lol I thought I was going mad thinking off solutions such as muscle rub, I am glad too hear you also had a like minded attempt at this and your finding actually makes sense.
So I can X that from the list lol

It is true grouse i often go out during winter with the camera before dawn in most cases find a spot to hide ( wildlife photographer ) and i do not feel the cold until i have been out for a while , but this soon passes and my body / mind becomes unaware of the cold again.
i do find the Zippo hand warmer to be fantastic at its job and helps on those days when i need an extra bit of heat on my hands.

I seem to remember last season somebody suggesting rubbing vaseline well into the hands, then followed by latex gloves, then golf/neoprene/wool gloves or mittens.

Did you also reach the conclusion that washing your hands before you have a pee was a good thing to do?

I say this because first it's true and secondly to make a serious point: Cold is relative and you become used to it.
Grouse

I'm not sure about where you are but wind chill and relative humidity on an island in the Atlantic si a big issue. I have been in Canada when it has been -25 degrees and been quite comfortable. Equally, I have been in - not much in the Scottish highlands seeing people go down with exposure
