Default Can anyone help a beginner and recommend a river fly?

Had a couple of visits to the river in the hope of catching my first ever fish on the fly, nothing so far . The river holds brown trout and grayling, this I know for sure as I never have a problem catching on coarse tackle.

So can anyone recommend an effective river fly for this time of year to set me on my way and land my first ever fish......

    Thanks all
    Martyn

    Hello Martyn

Trout are out of season at this time of the year, so unfortunately cannot be specifically targeted.

As for the grayling, make sure you use heavily weighted nymphs (tungsten bead heads) and I'd try any general nymph pattern such as PTN and GRHE in sizes 14 - 18 used in combination with a pink shrimp (size 12 - 14). I'm not so sure that pattern choice is as important as getting the flies down to the fish.

January on rivers isnt the easiest time to be trying to catch your first fish on fly..

but the advice so far is excellent..

As already mentioned you need to get the fly down to the bottom. Its been cold recently and so Grayling will be less free roaming so look for a Riverbed depression / hole in freezing conditions. Try a Shorter line casting the flies, leader and a short section of fly line upstream and just strike anything that looks unusual at the end of the Fly line. Once you find them it gets easier

In that case, why not go and chuck a lure at a stockie on a Commercial Fishery?

Honestly? i'm a bit worried about looking like a tool who has never caught before which is why i had hoped to catch down the river first. this is all really new to me. But then i guess so was coarse fishing all those years ago.

The time spent on the river so far, despite not catching, certainly hasn't been a waste of time. My casting accuracy and distance has improved from the first tangled mess i ended up in.

Yer daft pillock. Nobody's going to laugh at you and if they do they're not worth bothering about. Everybody has to start somewhere. I don't know the fisheries down your way but put up a post asking and somebody on here will advise you.
Commercials want you to come back so they'll do everything they can to help you catch. When you turn up and pay your money, tell them you're a newbie and ask their advice. They'll go out of their way to help you.

As Coasty says, rivers aren't at their easiest at this time of year and the grayling can be fickle and difficult to find. At least on a commercial, you know that they are there. There's almost always a window when Rainbows will come on - very often they'll take throughout the day - they are a coldwater species. The trick is to find the depth that they're moving around at. Well, one of the tricks
