Default Dissapointing Avington experience

Hi guys

My dad will be visiting in a couple of weeks and I had promised him a trip upto Avington so thought I would call them this evening and book. I thought I would also book for next week to 'get my eye in' as it were as although I used to go half a dozen times a year, I haven't been since about this time last year.

So I gave them a call this evening to book. Now I have always found the staff there very friendly and to be honest apart from the stalking aspect its one of the reasons I keep going to the exclusion of other local waters. Anyway I called and spoke to an older guy. I asked him (as I used to do when looking to book) how the water clarity is for stalking with all the rain we have been having. He just said it depends on the day and he can't say. The manner he said it was incredibly rude and abrupt. I explained that I am aware the weather influences the fishing but I was asking about the clarity of the water due to run off, especially when the local rivers are carrying colour. He just repeated what he said about the weather and the day in a manner as if I had just called his mother all the names under the sun! Then he advised that the anglers fishing today had 60 fish between them so obviously its fishing well. I agreed that was good news but explained that I go to stalk the big ones as that is what really interests me and again asked him if he can tell me about the clarity. Same very rude tone and the same thing kept being repeated again and again until I realised that a) I wasn't going to get an answer and b) I would be hanging up if I was to continue being spoken to in this way.

I have really been looking forward to going again and as I am in a better financial situation than last year was looking to start going regularly again. I have even invested a few hundred pounds updating my flytying gear and have already tied about 30 flies in anticipation. But this attitude has really put me off ever going to Avington again. I work in Technical Claims for a home insurer and so am used to complaints and aggressive people yet I am struggling to think of a time I have been spoken to in such a manner for now reason. And this guy isn't a complaining customer he's the one I am going to be giving 240 to in the next couple of weeks and potentially quite a bit more over the rest of the season and beyond! You'd think I was offering to pay him in s**t!

This has really put me off Avington and I am 90% sure I'm going to cancel all my bookings. The only reason I haven't already is my dad really wants to go so I'm holding back.

As I have tended to fish Avington to the exclusion of any other Trout waters I'm not familiar with similar ones near me. Can anyone recommend a similar stalking water in a nice setting within an hour or so of Bournemouth where the staff have a bit of respect for their customers.

Cheers

Matt

I have to say that I am very surprised to hear that you had a bad experience with the staff at Avington. I have known Sam, Dorjee and Cameron for many years and have never known any of them give the kind of service you describe.
Having said that, any of us could have a bad day, so I would suggest that you treat it as a one-off and simply have a quiet word next time you visit.
Re your original question to the fishery, the advice you were given, if not the manner in which it was delivered, was correct. You cannot predict what effect the weather will have on water clarity a week in advance. A phone call the day before would be more appropriate to confirm or cancel your booking as appropriate. For stalking large fish the only other water in your area that I would reccommend is Dever Springs, but you will find the same clarity situation there.

Same feedback as pan, the Avington guys have always been perfectly OK, indeed helpful, when I have phoned and visited. Plus drought followed by torrent isn't exactly great for fishery owners and bailiffs.

You can often find interesting and worthwhile stalking in Island lake at Avon Springs in the summer months. However the fish aren't as uniformly large as at Avington or Dever, and again you run the risk of catching Barry on a bad day....

Matt,

I've fished Church Paddock (just outside Winchester) a couple of times in the last 6 weeks, and it seems to be getting a following as a stalking venue. It's a small lake and it's uniformly pretty shallow, but the visibilty has been great when I've been there and stalking the doubles was fun. It's not as serious as Dever or Avington, but the owner was really friendly and helpful, and we've almost had the place to ourselves. The average stock size seems to be around 3-4lb but there are definitely quite a few doubles in there. Suggest you call ahead and ask about water clairty with this rain - am sure you'll get a straight answer.

All the best
Philip

Paul, as I say I have always found the staff very friendly so I was surpised as you probably were when you read my post to be spoken to in that way. I'm not sure who I spoke to their to be honest. I appreciate what he was saying about the weather on the day affecting visibility though but I was asking him how the clarity was due to the rain. I wasn't asking him to predict conditions on the days I am looking to fish. Like you say, I would call the day before or something for that.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions of alternatives.Has anyone any experience of Chalk Springs at all and how compares to Avington? Regarding Dever I know it used to be in the press all the time when Nigel Jackson owned it but how is it now and how does ot compare to Avington?

p.s I might look into that one in Winchester a bit as well

Cheers and regards

Browniebasher is a Chalk Springs regular, and he rates it highly. Better hope he picks up on this thread...
