I have tried that, makes close in casting very easy, I would use lines that cost less than a tenner if you are worried about wrecking them.

Mmmmm . . . . I think you may have 'cobbled together' various snippets and made some assumptions that don't really hang together as an entity.

Whereas this and other forums, Google etc contain a wealth of information and well intentioned 'advice' you have to be aware that elements of it are at best ill informed and often misleading 'opinion'. Much like what's written in The Daily Mail . . . It ain't necessarily so.

Hello John. Rod is/was in the forum rods for sale recently.Close friend had a 9ft 6wt custom build from Steve when he was here with us and for me it is a superb fly rod. Best JP
JP - I reaslised you might be referring to a second hand rod in classifieds after I'd posted - DOH

I have a Sparton General rod that Steve made for me in late 2009, along with a sink tip shooting head he made from 2 of his fly lines, plus a Sparton drogue and a few green butt tadpole lures. All first class kit, and I quietly thank Steve every time one or more of them helps me catch a reservoir trout.

I know what you mean, I think most of what is written re rod and line weights for casting long distances should be taken with a pinch of salt.
