    Can't you see that your contribution is to say the a particular rod is a great rod but that that might have nothing to do with what we're talking about which is whether the price of all premium rods can be justified by their performance?

    I would say their performance is the only thing that can justify their price, whether some fashionistas buy them too or not.

    But the rod makers don't do it like that.

    "Let's make an 800 dollar rod. There are plenty of wealthy or foolish anglers out there and it will give us a jump on the opposition"

    "Good idea. What can we do to make it look suitably costly to manufacture? Also we will have to think up some elitist advertising too. Perhaps about expert casters or something like that"
