These are or were often referred to as 'Petit mal', literally short illnesses. It usually affects quite young people who, with medication, overcome the issue . . . but, driving is a problem for obvious reasons. I think that there's an exclusion period, 3 years or so, without a 'seizure' before you're allowed to drive again.

Until you're not allowed to drive it never occurs to you what a limiting factor it is . . . I've been there, twice!

I have BUPA cover through work so I am going to contact them tomorrow to see a specialist. I hope it is not but having read a lot of information(never the best idea) and it sounds very much like it could be.

Read the .pdf available on this link. These are the guidance notes that medical professionals will use, and it will guide you on the restrictions on driving licences

I had to refrain from driving for 12 weeks last year after a fall which put me in hospital could have been triggered by a number of unidentified causes.

You are correct in thinking that using the company medical scheme is good for expediting an answer. I saw a cardiologist and a neurologist using my employers scheme and had every test possible within 4 weeks of the incident. As good as the NH is this was faster.

I had to notify DVLA myself, the Docs didn't do it for me. From the moment the first Doc said don't drive I didn't touch the car keys.

Strange thing was after 12 weeks the specialists were happy that they had identified cause and given treatment and said I could drive, but it took a further 13 weeks to get confirmation that DVLA medical were also happy , I could drive quite legaly whilst awaiting the answer . DVLA medical contact your specialists directly .

I know one lady who was suspended from driving due to epilepsy , and she is now driving with a license to be renewed every 12 months rather than 10 years.

Your vehicle insurer cannot discriminate and penalise you financially for a condition, if you have a valid license. You must tell the insurer when you resume driving that you have a DVLA notifiable condition and whether or not DVLA have imposed a license restriction ( e.g. 1 year license, 3 year license etc ) . If you go onto a new restricted license any "grandfather rights" for minibus or 7.5 tonnes are removed.

Although it is a shock, honestly, a spell of not driving isn't the end of the world . Good luck and I hope you get everything sorted out as quickly as possible.

Sorry to hear your bad news, however having been stationed in Scotland for over 3 years and knowing the nature of most of your fellow country men, I know for sure you wont be short of offers of help with anything you need.
All the best.
Paul.

Sincerely hope there's a satisfactory outcome to your ailment, hopefully, it's something very temporary & you are soon able to cast a line again.
