Good points all but here in the Pacific Northwest there's one more reason ... Salmon/Steelhead spawing beds. Unless you're dumber than a stump these are easy to spot.

Very little in the way of bottom 'dirt' but where spawning has happened all this has been tail kicked aside so you're looking at a clean gravel patch on the bottom.
