I'm happier to buy from the middle men in the UK as long as they are only taking a sensible wedge in profit. It's when you can see they have doubled the price or more that I baulk.
It's worth supporting the fair traders, not everyone wants to deal directly with Shanghai.

I predict that the UK brands selling tackle which they now source in China will soon be out of business. We the consumers can easily cut them out of the loop and I for one now do so. It serves them right for exporting jobs to China in the name of increased profit.
I should have added Maxcatch rod arrived in 1 week. Anglerdream took two weeks.

This looks like becoming another "Cost of rods" thread.
I think I'm gonna need a bigger rod.

Everyone sources from China and have done for many years, by the way was the price you paid the same price on the customs declaration?

They certainly do a large range of rods, even Korean Carbon.

Korean SK Carbon - Qingdao Leichi Industrial & Trade Co.,Ltd

Edit : Now that I have flicked around the Leichi website and looked at the other flyfishing products, there are a number of items which look very familiar, reels, nets etc.

An interesting point, I've been thinking similar lately. I recently bought a Nano 5 & 6 wt from Qingdao direct, they came in at 160 the pair landed. They were actually priced at $71 & $73 respectively, they then add on UPS expedited shipping (5 days) and a few points to cover their PP fee. I've now bought a few rods and reels from China and have yet to be charged VAT or landed duty, I seem to recall the VAT threshold is circa 35 (I'll stand corrected, something like that) so I've no idea why I haven't been charged?

Anyway, these two rods from Maxcatch would have cost circa 220 delivered from eBay, so a pretty decent saving. Btw, I recently bought a 4wt from Maxcatch (a 9ft V-Gold IM12 with an additional 23% off, this is getting ridiculous, it cost 58.21 landed) and the payment on PP went through to Qingdao Leichi, so it seems they own Maxcatch, go figure.

Maxcatch is Qingdao Leichi's inhouse brand, something they use to hide but now are quite open about it

No, a friend has bought some gear to get him started which was a 9' rod, a reel, fly line and a bag. The quality of the rod is akin to a shaky agility, ie guides don't line up particularly well, bits of random glue on the blank, cheap cork and reel seat. The reel is actually very nice in finish but the drag is a bit stuttery when playing off the reel, more than capable for stockie bashing which is what it's intended though The fly line is junk and the stitching on the bag is poor.

His order came to $170 inc shipping and he paid 30 in vat and handling fee
