    Default Guideline Fario 8’6” 5wt

    Hi all

I have a Guideline Fario 8’6” 5wt which I use for river dry fly fishing. I have it poorly matched with a Rio Grand WF5 and I’m really struggling with short range casting. Any tips on a) a better line and b) casting tips for this particular rod? I’ve been fishing all types of fast and slow rods for years and never had the short range casting problems I’m having with the Fario. It’s clearly a lovely rod but either my line is wrong or I’m doing something wrong!

    Thanks

    Barrio Smallstream or Mallard. Done.

They are true to weight, should give you better presentation and are generally great lines.

If they don't solve it then there is something horribly wrong and you need a new rod or some lessons.

    Cheers,

I would have thought the Rio would be ideal for short casts! Go up a line size (and some) if you can and try again. I have the Fario 8.9ft #3 and no problems even using French leaders. It could be a case of a wrong label on the rod.

    What about a Guideline line.
I use Presentation Evolve, but I think there is one better suited to short distance casts?

The RIO Grand is already up a line-weight, so you're fishing a 6wt line on the 5wt (even though the line says it's a 5wt). The RIO Perception line has a nice short head that would load well at close-quarters, and is true to weight so the 5 would work nicely. Alternatively the Cortland 444 WF5 would be a nice option too. I'd say go for something like a RIO Gold as an allrounder, but it has a 47ft head so wouldn't work so well at close-quarters!

I'd say a casting lesson as the line should be ideal for short casts with said rod,, or go out on a ressie/pond/park and practice where there is no obstructions.

Thanks all. I’m going to try the Barrio Smallstream WF5 and if that doesn’t work the problem is me! Been fishing multiple sizes of rods with different actions for years on loughs and streams with no issue but maybe it is just me!

I am a user of Rio Lines and would not put the 5wt Gold down as a short hop river dry fly line as more of an allrounder. However I am baffled given your experience. Will be interesting to know how the Barrio fares.
