how he may read upon the varying skies, from thence to judge the order of his flies,
how he may place them on his trailing link, know which should float,or which should partly sink

Last years dry and long summer is the issue, the soil would of been too dry for the eggs to hatch limiting this years hatch.

That make sense and may explain why there seems more about the further north you go
I fish, therefore I am 'Rene Descartes' { or was it captain birdseye}?

I've not noticed any the brown gangly daddie's this year but I have noticed a few of the smaller black crane flies over the last couple of days.

Not seen any around the grass land on the river or my house and garden so yesterday I thought Mr Trout would like a treat tied on a Daddy and after about half an hour decided I was wasting time and energy. They completly ignored it

No daddies around but I caught three on them this week; plus one on a giant mayfly (found link). There's no mayfly around either.

The fish and I like massive dry flies because we can both see them.

I was fishing a small lake in the Co. Westmeath on Friday, there were plenty of daddies around the margins. There was a hatch of cinnamon sedge in the middle of the afternoon and the trout were on these guys. Managed to catch 4 on Invicta and Kate McClaren.

Was it just after they'd been tipped in from the fish farm perhaps? :-)

Nope, very well educated, long-term C&R only fish :-)
