    Default Onki #5 rod action

An eternal question but am thinking of buying an Onki 9ft 5# rod that I will likely use with a 6# Barrio SLX line.

What would people with the same rod say the action is? Tried a friend's 7# and thought it was a fast action. I know one man's rod is another man's poison but any views would be appreciated. Will try and test one out before I buy if I can.

I haven't cast one but waggling one in the shop I would say its a fast action rod.

I’ve had one for about 18 months.
I wouldn’t describe it as a ‘fast’ action, medium fast maybe, I really like it.
From memory, it was said in the past that different weight Onkis had differing actions with the lighter weights being slower than the heavier ones.
If you can find some of rogerh’s old posts on here you’ll get a better idea. A pity he hasn’t posted for a while.
If you do go for one, Uttings seem to be consistently the cheapest retailer, by quite a margin in some cases.
Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught and the last river poisoned, will we realise, we cannot eat money.

I'd be more concerned about the #6wt Barrio SLX which, in all reality, is a #7wt.

A #5wt SLX is really a #6wt so I've stopped using mine on my #5wt Orvis Clearwater as I feel it's too heavy.

If you did want to over-line the #5wt rod a #5wt SLX would be fine.

Here is Rogers thread Vision Onki 10'0" #6 & 9'0" #4 user review

I have 9ft 5# and think its a great rod quite light so matched it to a Piscifun Sword 5/6, Would definitely get another if anything bad happened to it.

Uttings have it for sale at 189.99 if you sign up for email they were giving 10% off first order.

    Regards

I’ve got a 9” 6# , actually bought it from Roger h through this forum, and really like it .

I don’t have sufficient experience to comment on action but very light and well finished.

Thinking of getting a 5# in the future .

    I have the 9' #5.

I've only used it a couple of times but my view is similar to Morayfishers, I wouldn't describe it as fast either, more medium to medium/fast. I needed to slow my casting stroke down a tad when I first used it.

I've only tried mine with #5 lines and it's been great. Easy to cast. You won't need a #6 line on it imo although I'm sure it will work fine with #6's but maybe not that Barrio line based on Tommy Ruffe's comments.

Looked at Uttings and seems a great deal 189 less 10% for first order. Think that is about the same price as when they came out. Will definitely buy from them.

Senegals, thanks for the Uttings tip. Bought the Onki for 170.99 + 4.99p&p. Glasgow Angling 249.99 + 6.99 p&p. No brainer will use the again. Know you don't get the extra 10% but they are still good value.
