I change my most used floating line each season, the others get fairly infrequent use and last well over three seasons.

Would love to have the self discipline of owning a silk line which improves with age but I learned bad habits when I bought into plastic at the start of my trout bothering and the one silk line I owned, a level 3 weight, died a death thanks to careless use. Perhaps when I retire - although I doubt it somehow, composting 100 lines is a bloody expensive hobby.

I fish on average 70 -80 times per year @ around 4hours per session on average.

I only use the one fly line (5#) and I replace it every year.

So I think that I get good value out of a barrio @ twenty seven quid.

It is almost certainly down to how much you use them and in what conditions.I remember coming back from 1 days fishing on the north shore of Sutton Bingham and my Rio midge tip was wrecked.(clay banks with sharp grit)
I tend to go along with this. I've found quality fly lines are long lasting if looked after well, it should take quite a few years before all the plasticiser in them is used up. But the running section of WF lines can be vulnerable. And similarly to Jim's comment, winter fishing at the old Langford fishery - a former gravel pit - would wreck a good quality floating line in one season because of the abrasive effect of the bankside gravel and grit.

I'm in the "as & when required" category, however, I did keep an old floater simply because it became a reliable sink-tip. As the rest of the line slowly deteriorated, I finally replaced it with a traditional sink-tip.

Jim, it was a really good line for taking the line/leader joint just under the surface when fishing the surface lure, it caught it's fair share of sea trout.
