I bet you can get a dozen answers from folk to that one.

Different folk will have preferred ways. I don't know if I have a preferred way - it's almost a case of treating each occasion on its own merits. What size are the fish? Do you have a boat partner who can give you a hand if required? Where is the bigger of the two? I've seen occasions of a small one on the dropper and a big one on the tail and just hoisting the small one right up out the water and netting the big one. If there are two nets in the boat, you can net the top one and carefully draw the net up until the tail one becomes nettable (at some risk of it either snapping of, falling off or opening the hook out). Sometimes it's a case of netting the top one and holding the net outside the boat and quickly unhooking it and then netting the tail fish. When you have netted the top one, there isn't the same pressure being put on the tail one, and it will quite often sit quietly while you unhook the first one. If the tail fish isn't big enough to break off, then you can net the top fish and simply handline the tail fish and lift it out. If the tail fish is a real good one, I have seen us net the top one and quickly snip the fly off without wasting time trying to unhook it.

A sea trout and a finnock twos-up from August this year...

How about when you hook 3 at once?

    And that was on fluoro!

Must be an exceedingly prolific (well stocked) water to hook three fish at once. I've never seen, nor heard of, that being done in 45 years of splodgin'! 😂

Aren't we the lucky ones, to have such waters up here, providing us with such good fishing?

Totally wild fish. The water is never stocked. The complaint these days is that there are too many fish in it as a result of all this obsession with returning everything. This has driven the average size down, so that you now get 3 fish like those, when you used to get one 2 pounder. It could do with thinning-out a bit. Yet, if you post a photo of a wild brownie you chapped, you will no doubt get a reply from a Catch & Releasta, saying "Nice, fish, but did you have to kill it?"

Threes-up not that rare an event, surely? I remember getting a 3s-up of stockie rainbows on Menteith, many years ago, and landing all 3, on 5 lb Drennan Subsurface.

Alex F with a 3s-up on Loch Harray - all landed...

I remember a guy in our club who fishes 4 flies getting a 4s-up on Menteith many moons ago. He landed 3 of them, and only lost the 4th because it went through a hole in the net and got off.

Rainbows regularly swim together in packs, so if you hook one, there is the chance that another, or even 2, will take one of the trailing flies in a 3-fly cast. With brownies, it is often topography-related. You are drifting along in featureless water... nothing, nothing, nothing, and then you drift past a skerry, and cast towards it... and you hook, one, two or even three fish... which is what happened in that pic above.

On the subject of double hook-ups, a mate was fishing one night with me, above us was a pool too deep to wade. I entered the pool below & proceeded to fish it down. When far enough away from my mate, he entered the river & commenced fishing a pair of sea trout lures upstream & drawing them back. After a few casts he suddenly "blasphemed" & said he'd had 2 knocks, lifting the rod to recast there was a sea trout firmly attached. When it was netted the dropper & point fly were firmly attached to the fish, hence his explanation for the 2 knocks. 1 fish, 2 flies?
