    Default Let's TACKLE cancer

I, like many on here will no doubt know, or have a relative who has had cancer.
My sister survived breast cancer in her early 40's and I lost an aunt and a grandfather to it, so for many years I have always made personal donations to cancer research, it's just high on my list, always has been.
I don't feel enough is done from the governments of any country, and far too much is left to individuals to come forward and pledge their own money in trying to find a cure for this despicable disease, but that's the way it is.
We have some wonderful people out there, Macmillan nurses spring to mind, as do many other wonderful organisations.
We do lots on here for various funds, and I am amazed sometimes by peoples generosity, even for something like the well run auction each year for the Monnow trust.
I have for a while now been contemplating doing this, and recent events from today and poor old Royvs, have just made me think, and get this idea in progress.
I appreciate it is only a small gesture on my part, but it all helps, and is a very worthwhile cause I think.
So, with admins permission, and your help, I would like to offer a packet of three mixed Furled Leaders, consisting of
    1x 3ft olive green
    1x 5ft " "
and 1x Hi Viz grayling leader, for auction each month for the next twelve months, starting in January 2011.
I will tie these and post them out to the winning bidder, and they will be packaged and come complete with an instruction leaflet.
I think, it would be better, if a named and trusted person from the forum, would accept payment for them, rather than me, that way we have no ill feelings or doubts as to where the money has ended up.
I wouldn't for one minute think of doing such a thing, but I would feel better if someone else would accept that roll.
Payment for the winning bid can either be paid by Paypal gift or cheque to the nominated trustee, and he or she, can obtain a receipt for it.
I will leave it to you to decide upon a member to do this, I have a few trusted forum members in my head, who I am sure would be more than willing to do this, but for now I'll leave it up to you to decide, I haven't approached anyone yet.
The starting price for the leaders will be £10 as that would be the normal charge for them, in the unlikely event that no bids were placed, then I will donate £10 to the said trustee from my own pocket, at the end of each month.
Thanks for reading all this, if you feel it is a futile attempt to raise a few quid, then say so, otherwise, with admins permission, I will put up the first packet of leaders in January.
Look forward to your input and help, thanks.
    Steven.

    Steven, excellent idea.

Get knitting, I wish you luck!
I'll support any worthwhile charity but reserve a soft spot for the Macmillan girls - long story and not really for public consumption.

As usual, I am overwhelmed at a few responses I have had since posting this idea.
Wullie, (silversedge) has offered two dozen of his yellow owl flies, and Toby wishes to get involved also, so there might be quite a bit more on offer in January, and some nice things to bid for.
My thanks to all who have offered their support.

I have received some amazing PM's from people, one of which brought me to tears, a private but VERY moving story, and a happy ending, moving stuff.
I haven't had any suggestions for a treasurer as yet, so I have approached one very respected forum member, and asked if he will take the task on.
If he will then I will put it forward to you, can't see you not condoning this chap, a forum stalwart.
Thanks at the moment go to repairman Tam, Munro Reidy, and Ben sunkistbob, all with donations to the auction, I thought it was just my leaders, but it looks like some decent stuff might be on offer afterall.
    Cheers all, S.

What a fantistically generous offer... good on you!!
I doubt there are many people that haven't been touched by cancer...

You mentioned having someone collect the cash for you, while I am sure many of the forum are very trustworthy I do have an alternative suggestion. Have you thought of using JustGiving, they make it really easy to donate and are able to claim back Gift Aid from the tax man, i.e. for everyone £1 donated they also get the tax back so for the average person this means £1.28 is donated. Justgiving does charge a nominal fee (explained on their site) but the charities still end up better off.

9000 UK Charities are registered with them, including Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

It is very easy to create an account and personal objective say "Leaders for Cancer", where the auction winners can donate the money and it goes straight to the charity without having to pass through your or anyone else's hands.

    Regards
    -Alun.

Hi Alun, I really appreciate that input, and it makes total sense.
That is what I think we will do, I am in negotiations with a forum member who is used to doing these things, and he has kindly offered to do this for me.
I will post up on it shortly as to the outcome.
    Thanks again Steven.
