Thanks everyone for all the great advice. Had a great evening on the Esk tonight and caught three small fish, I think they’re trout! Unfortunately I managed to take the end eyelet off the end of my rod. If I reattach it what do you use to fix it on? Would you need clear varnish on a split cane rod? Looking at previous mending my dad must’ve done.. I wondered if I wrap cotton around tightly and then seal it with something? Had a wonderfully friendly stoat with me on the river bank, he was quite inquisitive for a wild animal! Hope everyone’s enjoying the season! 😁

If the glue has dried out and the eye has fallen off I'd just glue it back on with hot melt glue, if the cane has parted I couldn't comment on the repair but someone will be able to advise you.
It's good to hear that you caught a few fish and had the opportunity to watch a curious stoat.

eh thats fishing the good with the bad
how he may read upon the varying skies, from thence to judge the order of his flies,
how he may place them on his trailing link, know which should float,or which should partly sink

Hi Mell, welcome to the forum. The Esk is a nice looking river - fished it only once a couple of years ago and yes caught a lot of tiny trout:

Hi to everyone who has left me really helpful advice on this thread. I've heeded all of it!

I bought myself some new flies and have left a fair few of them up in trees and attached to underwater snags so I'm grateful I didn't continue using my dad's.

I successfully mended the rod tip and also repaired the other rod my dad had that is longer and slightly heavier than the one I'm using. His mending was somewhat make shift (I don't think DIY was his strongest point!). The tip has been out on the river numerous times and is still intact so I'm happy with that!

The river around here is still low but i've been out fishing about every other day early morning or evening and have caught very little but my casting is getting better. I'm still casting some like I've left my brain and coordination at home but i expect it'll be some years before I stop doing that!

My husband now has a christmas list for me that includes waders, a mat & hopefully membership to the local fishing syndicate..the last one is unlikely but a girl can but wish!

So pleased I bit the bullet and took myself off to the river. The youtube videos have been hugely helpful. I'm definitely going to book a lesson though. I need to break the bad habits before they become set in. Thanks Simon for the Pickering suggestion, it's only 20 minutes from me so I may give that a go if membership is still available next season.

Thanks again everyone for replying here. I don't feel as self-conscious asking daft questions on here!

Tight lines (see I'm learning the lingo too!)
    Mell
