    Maxcatch Gold line v Scientific Anglers

    I used to buy commercial products like Winston/Loomis/Sage rods and production "high end" reels like Abel, etc. Those were all made in the US, but even if there were some components on them (which I don't believe) or used to construct them from China such as threads, varnishes, etc, I don't...

    Polarised sunnies on a tight budget..

    Apologies though I did talk about Costas, I think a couple of valid points were made: 1. Buying at overseas discount stores will enable you to buy top end glasses like Costas which cost over £200 here for sometimes close to half that (depending on exchange rate and model). 2. Presciption...

    Polarised sunnies on a tight budget..

    I'm currently using Costa glass sunglasses which I get from the US via framesdirect. I need glasses for computer work and driving but I don't use prescription sunglasses, though I'm thinking I may need to in the near future. I checked on framesdirect for prescription Costas and the price was...

    Best backing knot

    Is that a blind splice to make a loop? I've found that I can only do a blind splice loop with 30lb dacron. 20lb is too thin to thread the splicing needle/tool. I found a YouTube by George Anderson on how to do blind splice loops, but I use these for making backing loops to link with running line...

    Best backing knot

    As I said, an Albright is a good knot for this, but you'll need more turns if it's braid backing. Are you really going need much more backing moving from a wf4f to a wf3f? I'd be surprised if it's more than 5 yards?

    Split-Cane rods;

    It seems it wasn't down, but the website has some software to try and detect hackers and it thought I was trying to hack in when I was just viewing the catalogue so blocked my IP address (or group of addresses, as all devices couldn't enter). If there's anyone who was blocked like me, please...

    Reels for your cane and glass rods

    I looked up my old emails and I think it was about other rivers in the UK (apart from the Wye) who claimed to have self sustaining populations. His reply was this: I remember catching tiny rainbows like that in the little feeder running alongside Avington lakes, but I assume those were escapees.

    Reels for your cane and glass rods

    That should be a nice outfit Sean, where are those wild (self sustaining?) populations of rainbow? I spoke to Peter Cockwill a little while ago and his opinion was there there were none that reproduced in the UK. I know in places like Slovenia they do reproduce, and are a different kettle of...

    Reels for your cane and glass rods

    I've seen that Abel do a refurb service (or maybe not anymore) but it would be interesting to get a cheap old black coral TR and send that in to be refurbed with a Brook fish graphic? An expensive way to do it, but if there are none available...

    Split-Cane rods;

    Angling Auctions website seems to be down since I posted here last week. Hopefully they haven't been hacked! I have the pdf downloaded if anyone wants it, I may drop Neil an email, but I'm sure he knows the situation

    Best backing knot

    You mean just adding an extra piece of backing to the existing backing? Just use an Albright knot to join the 2 pieces of backing, and you can use the same knot to join the backing to the flyline as well, though you may need some Knot Sense or other to make a smooth covering over the knots.

    Ultimate glass outfit

    Well I got the Yomogi out this weekend for a cast in the garden. I spooled up the Kineya with an old Rio Selective Trout WF4, and it fit, but with no backing - which is ok, as it's for small stream tiny fish. I've never seen a river trout even take any backing. Eventually a half length Yano sild...

    Whitefish fishing in Sweden

    I was in BC on a steelhead trip and was swinging one run with egg and nymph flies as suggested by the guide. I hooked a fish and brought it in and I said "I caught a grayling " whereupon the guide said "we don't have grayling in BC, it's a whitefish ". I said "what's that?", his response was...

    'Mono Rig' for Salmon

    I used to go to Asturias in northern spain for salmon for many years, and the guide showed me the local technique for fishing for salmon in deep clear pools. They use very heavy nymphs, on a floss like line like backing on a long light rod, normally a spinning rod. The line is swung upstream and...

    Split-Cane rods;

    Very nice build, Jason. I like the blond cane with the clear wraps, and very smart with the dark royal purple wraps on the ferrules and butt for accent. Very nice hardware and spacer too. Is that Box elder burl?
