None more worthy that's for sure.

Just a bit of general chit chat about Rugby Union, I read this morning that the powers that be are thinking of preventing the team without the ball at the tackle, getting over it in order to turn it over or slow down release with use of the hands. i.e the days of the 'jackal' at the tackle are numbered. The reasoning is to protect the big hits coming in on the jackal(s) and the idea being that the team going forward will win the ball with superior strength and numbers. So, the ruck is coming back, the team who put numbers into the ruck will win the ball, space will (may be created).
Brilliant, only this has been discussed for years down our little club and numerous others, and the bigwigs just get it now. But will giving the opposition a good shoeing come back? Don't think so, certainly don't hope so.
Whatever, RU may begin to look discernible again from RL, and I reckon that's a good thing. Or did i imagine or misinterpret the whole article? Probably.
    Cheers, Del

Be nice to see proper rucking again. The "shoeing" issues of old certainly sorted out any issues and with discipline far more prominent now, any indiscretions would be quickly dealt with.
My only other issue is still the crooked feed at scrum time. Throw a ball into the lineout over 20 feet and if it's off by 6" you get pulled up.
Feed it into a scrum over 4 feet and you can skew it by a good 12 inches and no one bats an eyelid.

Yes, looks like we will be seeing new trial laws again. I read that they might outlaw tackles below the nipples and yes the 'jackal' looks to be a dying animal. I kind of don't mind rucking coming back of sorts as teams will have to drive over the ball to win it. I was surprised to read that 4 young French players have died playing rugby over the last year (wasn't aware of that) I also think it's a good thing reducing the number of replacements - I'd go further and have no tactical replacements at all. The one change that might be interesting is the kick from own half bouncing into touch will result in an attacking throw in. I'm struggling to see how the defence will cope with both a running threat and covering the touch line? Cross field kicks to touch will become standard to gain territory.

Re the reward for a good touch finder, I think the idea is again to create space for the attacking team, but as you mention, this is going to encourage kicking for, instead of playing for, position.
Can't disagree re replacements, but front rowers especially may have a different point of view. Obviously injured players will/can be replaced, but how is that going to be adjudicated?
Overall, not bad plans in my view.

If the front rowers can't be replaced then they will have to pace themselves over the game and that may lessen the physical intensity of the scrums into something more tactical. I rather like a well placed tactical kick and since it appears more difficult to really contest a lineout today the granting of an attacking lineout may make it more worthwhile. It could end up being a get-out-of-jail card for those teams that are unable to keep the ball for multiple phases. I would have thought that wingers were always expected to handle kicks to touch so I'm not sure it would affect defense that much.
