Thread: General Nature Photos

Heading out for a day's boat fishing with Mark Hirst on Loch Lochy on Saturday, Mark spotted 3 otters in the distance. He did his best to sneak up on them. As luck would have it, they kind of came towards us anyway, and I started firing off some shots. Quite tricky with the focusing - needing to go down to centre point only, to stop it catching the ripples of water instead of the otters, but then having my work cut out to keep it on them, as they were constantly moving about.

After a bit, they clocked us, and I could hear them giving us the 'snort' treatment as they peered at us, trying to make out what we were. As quickly as they were close to us, they were very far away.

These are all crops of full frame/400 mm shots...

This shows up the focusing issue. Focused on the one on the right, and the one on the left, only 6 inches or so behind it, is distinctly soft...

Thanks Andy, and nice shot. Aye, I always carry a full spare battery, plus I get about 1500 shots from one. I have dual card slots and have a 64 GB CF card in one and a 128 GB SD card in the other, so hopefully I don't run out!

Latest things to come into bloom on the cycle path...

    Horse chestnut...

    Lesser speedwell...

Not sure if this is an escapee or part of the council's landscaping. I make it some species of Saussurea

Definitely council landscaping - a very orange Berberis...

Proper wildflower this time - and loads of it everwhere - Herb Bennet...

    A garden escapee, I think - a fancy-coloured broom...

    Properly wild again... Bush Vetch...

    Geranium molle

Some kind of rambling rose in the act of escaping...

Aye, noticed whole swathes of cuckoo flowers at the sides of the A9 on our way north last week. As for orange tips... took me quite a while to realise that only the males have orange-tips! Doh!

I've been seeing more orange-tips recently than all other butterflies put together (not that they've had much to beat, like ) I have been trying to catch one with the camera, but they don't hang about - always seem to be on the wing, and never landing. Finally, today, I spotted a male land. I made my way towards it carefully, going... click, move in a bit, click... move in a bit... what I didn't notice was the hoverfly in the bottom left...

Just as I was getting into a decent range of the orange-tip, the hoverfly took off. Instead of flying away, it flew straight towards the orange-tip...

It actually banged-into the orange-tip, which got a fright and immediately flew-off! Bugger!

Then it landed back, as if to say, "I saw-off that big white and orange thing, whatever it was."

    Aye, cheers, mate.
