My mate, Ron and I were through-by and stopped for a look at the Pots of Gartness, in case of any late leaping salmon shots. The river height looked ideal - just coming down to a nice height after a spike at the start of the week. Nothing! Stood for an hour and saw one fish. We were coming away and I said to Ron (for whom this was a first visit) "Before we go, come down here and see the river from the road bridge - there's another wee fall below it and a weir upstream of it..." So, we were standing on the bridge, and Ron says, "There's a kingfisher!" I looked upstream and, sure enough, there was a kingfisher on a tree branch above the river. I don't even know why Ron already had his 400 mm lens on, but he had! He started snapping away at it. What did I have on? The blummin' 24 mm wide-angle from doing a landscape of the river at the Pots. In the bag, I had the 100-400 mm and the x1.4 TC. As quick as I could, I opened the bag and assembled the 100-400 and x1.4. then removed the 24 mm and put the big lens on. But then I had to take the monopod quick release plate off the camera body and attach it to the big lens's tripod mount, before sticking the whole thing on the monopod and homing-in for a shot. All this time, Ron was firing away, getting loads of shots. At last, I was able to get something and I fired-off some frames, just to get something on the board (at whatever the current settings were), in case of getting nothing else. I could tell the KF was looking away from us at this point. After I fired off a few, I checked my settings. They were all over the shop, so I set about dialing-in something more appropriate. It was at this point that a heron appeared out of nowhere, flying upriver. He upset the KF, which flew off his branch and went upriver, never to reappear!

So, all I got was this distinctly average shot - humpty-backit, high ISO and not even in sharp focus...

Ron got some really great shots of it!

    Doh!
Now you know where he lives go back. They usually have a favourite branch and that might just be it
    Don't worry, be happy.

Carried it in full, then carry it out empty.

That guy is a 100 mile round trip. However, there is one in the Botanic Gardens that is within walking distance. Ron has been getting some good shots of him. I've only had one look myself, and I couldn't get near him for the Paparazzi!

First time I've had a crested tit on the window feeder.
Thousands of coal tits on the other feeders but I think he likes the peace and quiet.
