    Default Identification Brown trout?

    Hi

This is a mid Wales small river trout, measured at 47 cm so perhaps 2 3/4 lbs. All my fish go back, barbless hooks and I dont weigh them.

Im not familiar with the the spot patterning on this fish, they look like stars or crosses (X) rather than the circles ive usually seen. Ive caught sea trout with similar broken spots so am wondering whats occurring? There is also a lack of red spots although there is amber colouring on the lower head and anal fin?

Perhaps this is a typical brown trout for the region, would love to know?

If you didn't say where it was caught I would have guessed upper Clyde trout they have very similar markings even the cobalt blue blush on the head.

Thanks, appreciate the comments. Great photo Baztek1, what are you using? mine is an older iphone which does not like getting wet.

Jim, can you point me at the thread? Ive looked!

Perhaps spot patterning/colour is random and varies within local populations or perhaps there is a pattern linked genetically or physiologically to location, age etc? Im sure many have studied it and the answers are already out there, I just need to locate the info. This has interested me so I would like to follow it up.

    Cheers Martin
