An unusual year in the respect that of all the Orkney lochs , Swannay is by far the best fishing loch this year ( so far ) . Going by reports in the last couple of weeks it appears Boardhouse and Harray are fishing well at last , great news as i`m back up on Saturday .

We had two days on Swannay Matty and the sport was off the chart. Both days were perfect conditions right enough. Its probably my favourite nowadays.Boardhouse was poor but we had bright sun and a cold wind so never saw it at its best but it was awesome for us last year.I thought Harray was a bit meh this year to be honest but still had plenty of fish over the two days on it,despite less than ideal weather.Hope you have a good week...

The two you can see are the woigo Kate muddler with a peach tail ,probably the most productive pattern for me over the week and just edging the green tail version into second place. It also took my best fish of the week,a two and a half pounder from Swannay which exploded on to it like there was no tomorrow just as I lifted it into the surface about fifteen feet from the boat...what a take !! The other one is a sooty Olive dabbler which is another steady catcher for me up there and a reliable fly for middle position.Other good patterns across the week were, burnt orange, peach ,cow dung or chocolate hogs, doobry crippler and dunkeld dabbler.

I was up for 4 weeks in June , Swannay was good throughout , Harray had some good and some not so good days , Boardhouse was poor throughout .
One thing to consider though , there was a competition on boardhouse the day after i got up , i spoke to most people as they came in for the weigh in , nobody saw more than 2 or 3 fish rising and a few never saw a fish , i went out by myself on the monday and tuesday evening - the whole loch to myself , fish were rising everwhere and every type of fly life were on the water , however i never saw anything but the odd Boardhouse fish for the remainder of the time .
Back up for 4 weeks on saturday and hopefully all the lochs will be fishing well .

    Beautiful fish
There is a local saying, referring to salmon and sea trout rivers, that these will not fish well "until the bracken is tall enough to hide your bicycle"
