    Default latest efforts

Due to my missus upgrading her camera I acquired her old canon 300d.I had an interest in learning photography and several weeks ago I had advice from a few more experienced guys on the forum in the fly tying section which im very grateful for.Since then ive been reading and practicing my macro and feel its time to show where im at.I also would like to say the photography guides above have been very helpful. I don't have a 100mm macro lens yet so I used the 18-55mm that came with camera.More criticism and or advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Grant

A wee bit more light on the subject would help, not too shabby though!

Its the light indoors that's really challenging me.I moved this to the window sill but sods law the second I done it along came wind and rain and it went dull.Hope for a better day tomorrow.

    Thanks

thanks for the reply stuartpengs ill be sure to try that.I was using a grey card as a background with fly on the vise and used a block of foam to go to the window as something just to try before I finished and it turned out my best picture. If the black fly is harder ill try tying something a bit lighter tomorrow.Cracking photo by the way.

    Thanks

As Stu says, the worst thing you can start with is a dark fly on a white background. Have a shufty...

I actually had a read through that last night and the guide to fishing photography that you and scratch done.Very informative and helped me a lot especially with exposure which im still trying to understand.I am however delighted to say that only minutes ago I won a canon 100mm 2.8 usm lens on ebay so that should help me along.

    Thanks

Good stuff - yep, that will make a huge difference.

Re the lighting - I have all the same problems as you - going back and forth between trying to do it on the windowsill and trying with various artificial light set-ups. If you can take it outdoors on a bright, overcast day, the bright diffuse light helps a lot to give you the sort of results that Stu and Rob get against a white card. I'm stuck indoors with it all, so I often go for a 'light the fly and let the fall-off to background make it stand-out...' alternative sorta look . It does need a bit distance between the fly and the background though.
