Go for the 85mm f1.8, superb lens. Maybe a tadge long on a crop camera just depends on how you use it.

If you are looking for a 50 mm lens, an 85 mm lens is a different animal, surely? It's 35 mm longer on any body and giving you a different angle on your field of view.

Plenty 50 mm jobbies here for 71.80, post free... EF 50 mm f1.8

I use the 50mm Lens for my stuff alot of the time with a 10+ MACRO FILTER, seems to work a treat for me, although the DOF can be very shallow.

Everyone is different, eh? I've never used a 24-70 mm. My workhorse (over 50% of all images for past 6 years) has been the 24-105 mm. That 70-105 mm range is very useful for so much of what I do. I also had a 70-200 mm that I hardly used, and I ended up selling it. Main reason for that was I got a 100-400 mm and that ended up taking most of the rest of my shots. Most days out covering fishing, pheasant shooting, etc can be covered with just those 2 lenses.

And after saying that I use those 2 for 90% of my shots, its the 10% taken with primes that have that extra something in the finished image .

I'm none too keen on bokeh the aperture blades produce. It's a great price but if I were to go down the 50mm prime route I'd want something a bit special, like a 50mm version of my 35.
    He-he - I love this shot I took using your 35 mm 1.4 Sigma...

...and that was through a glass window too .

We'll need to do another lens swap next year - I'll try your 24-70 2.8 and you can have a go with my 50 mm 1.4 to see if you like it - it's just the basic Canon one mind, not the Sigma Art(y-farty )...

I know what you mean about the bokeh on the 50 mm 1.8. It seemed a bit 'different' to the others I tried when I was messing about doing the 'Christmas bokeh' shots last year...

I experimented with 4 different lenses and rejected all the ones I did with the 50 mm 1.8. Couldn't tell you why.
