    Default Book on bamboo?

    Hi all,
    Can anyone recommend a decent book on building bamboo rods? I would like to read up on it including manufacturing of the blank etc etc. Any such book available?

    Cheers,

    hi Brennan

    There are quite a few books available on the subject.

    The Lovely Reed - Jack Howell

    This would be my first choice, although I think its out of print now and secondhand copies can be pricey. Its a great guide to building bamboo rods and the author's style does a lot to convince you that its achievable.

    Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods - Wayne Cattenach
    Probably the most widely used 'intoduction' to bamboo rod building. Nearly as good as Jack Howell's book and easily available (Paul Morgan has copies)

    'A masters guide to building a bamboo fly rod' - Garrison/Carmichael

    The 'bible' A great book, but the other two books are more recent and i think a better introduction.

    Others worth reading;

    George Barnes - Fly Rods Galore
    Ray Gould - Constructing Cane Rods
    Ray Gould - Tips & tapers
    Best Of The Planning Form Vol 1
    Best Of The Planning Form Vol 2

    There is a huge amount of information available on the web regarding every aspect of bamboo rod building. From making your own planning forms through to varnishing.

    Fundamentals of Building a Bamboo Fly Rod (Maurer and Elser) is one that I like, easy to follow. You can get it on Amazon easily enough. But as Pete says there is a lot of stuff on the web as well.
