    Default handle diameter

    Hi
At the risk of asking a question that has been answered before :

How do you calculate or decide what is the correct handle diameter for a rod build?

What are the problems if you make it too narrow or wide ?

    Yours

Too wide is not a problem.as you can still slim it down((I prefer a slimmer handle than standard) but too slim and you have to start again.

the biggest drawback to a narrow handle would be when you come to bore/dremmel the inlet you want the bottom of the handle at least 6mm more than the diameter of the hood other wise the cork is going to be a bit thin at that point.
ive made about a dozen full wells handles in the last year or so on a simple hand drill jig ive come to what I think is the best size for me anyway is 27.5 mm in the middle and ends and 24.5 in the low points as far as length is concerned I make mine 173.5mm I don't see any need for it to be any longer than 174mm.

Narrow handles have a feeling of delicacy to them, one I sanded down made a dramatic difference to the cast, makes you want to be more precise, the catch is that too narrow gives you cramp in your hand, presumably because you have to grip it more or something.

I appreciate the replies posted so far, however the replies make me think 'one size fits all'.

Gloves are sold in specific sizes so why are rod handles not linked to this measurement ?

Hi all, First post. Handle diameter is governed by hand size. It makes a tremendous difference. I don't have a big hand so sand down mine. It affects tracking and sensitivity. I prefer my fingertips just touching the heel of my hand but only just. Hope that's some help,Rich.

Manufacturers seem to use a standard size for a given rod length. I suppose it's unrealistic to expect a range of handle sizes on a given model. What I've never understood is why they change from an eight inch long full wells on a 10'#7 to a six inch cigar on a 6'#3. As far as I know very few anglers can change to a smaller set of hands when they use a smaller rod and surely it would be cheaper to have one standard handle.
It's a very good argument for spending some cash with your favourite custom rod builder and getting the handle properly fitted to your hand.

The handle should fit the hand but the handle should also fit the rod. Two 7'6" #4 rods. The 2009 Gary Marshall fits my hand perfectly. The 1965 Hardy Marvel has a tiny handle in comparison but it fits the rod perfectly and I would not want it any other way. It determines how the rod is held and fished and effectively adds 2" to the rod length and action because the hand has to be so near the butt.
