Of course this is all down to personal preference but I'm not a huge fan of bling on rods so generally I like blued or bronzed fittings and guides. I'm also happy to see dull/aged ali or nickle on vintage rods and will happily recycle such fittings on to my own builds and renovations. Threadwork I like in maroon or chestnut on darker flamed/impregnated cane, or for light /straw coloured cane I like translucent primrose or clear. Handles I like cigar for sub 7' rods and half wells ( flare upper most, not reversed) for my longer rods up to 8'3". I'm quite happy with cork spacers for any type of reel seat - butt cap and ring for the cigar handled rods, down locking winch for the half wells. Certain combinations of the above just look absolutely right in my book

My preference is for a dark flamed blank preferably with a swelled butt with antique gold whippings, handle would be a half wells tapering down to the swell on the butt with an nice marked wooden burl reel seat with sliding ring and butt cap.

My preference would be cork real seat with cap and ring, with blued ferrules.
No real reason, just most of my vintage Split cane rods are configured this way, and i like the way they look.

I suppose it's just the way, 'we wuz brung up', but even though I've never made one to Sharpes Scottie specs, when someone mentions a cane rod that's what I see a picture of in my head. Cork reel seat insert, maroon wraps and half wells (not reversed) handle. I must have owned a dozen or more of them just like that. Bizarrely, when someone mentions a bamboo rod, I see my own favourite layout, olive wood insert, cigar grip, and wraps in pale olive tipped with highland green. In my psyche cane rods are Sharpes, Hardys, Pezon et Michel and all the Redditch makers but bamboo rods are more international. Yes I know it's nonsense but I never claimed to be sane, just harmless.

Personally I like blonde cane, cigar handle and understated but interesting burr wood real seat. as for wrappings I like them to link to something that means something to me. The only rod I have ever finished and wrapped used Pearsalls purple thread, a nod to my favourite fly, the snipe and purple. Having said that the rod was a dry fly rod so maybe I should say its inspired by the Kites imperial?

Well everyone, it's been educational. I thought there might be something approaching a general concensus on style but it seems there ain't. In a world where carbon fibre black sticks dominate, there's still room for individuality. Long may it continue.
Thanks for taking the time to give all the responses, I've enjoyed reading your thoughts very much.

I like a dark red or burgundy thread and a slightly brown varnish to give an aged look. For the same reason Iím not a fan of highly polished, new looking metal fittings and so prefer an unpolished brass appearance. For the handle I like something shaped rather than straight but Iím not to bothered what shape so long as itís comfortable.

That's a nice looking stick John, what line does it throw? #5? #6?
