Default A matter of personal taste

A question for admirers of bamboo rods. What do you like a cane rod to look like? I'm about to finish out a seven foot #4 and I'm interested in what shape of handle, colour of wraps, blued or unblued metalwork etc. that people find attractive in a cane rod. What appeals to you all?

I only have vintage cane rods and I like the original fittings etc. If I was finishing a new cane blank I would use black silk and have no intermediate whippings. I don't like the modern trend for transparent wraps. I would use snake rod rings and have a screw down winch fitting.

Thanks, I must admit I'm not really a fan of transparent wraps either, but you do what the guy writing the cheque wants don't you. I've only seen one rod with black wraps and must admit it was striking. What about handle shape? Any preference there?

I like a straight handle with trumpet shaped top, a hangover from carp fishing ?
I like black whippings because they don't dis-colour when varnished and they don't fade. I found that intermediate whippings add weight (silk and varnish absorbed) and can change the action of a rod. I restored a couple of rods and tried to keep them as original as possible.

I like a cigar grip and primrose silk wraps .Its way back i last did a cane rod from the "blanks" that hardy unloaded when they got out of cane sales.

Thanks Andy, did you colour preserve the primrose or let it go translucent?

Not sure why but I'd regard ruby red or emerald green whippings as traditional. Can't remember the name of the stuff but the old red lined stripping guides would go well with matching whippings.
