    Default Cheaper compnents

I know this is probably counter to the ethos of the self build but I was wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with using cheaper components. Looking on ebay I can buy 2 ready made handles and 2 reel seats for 14 total. Also see 2 x fuji copys for about 3.
Talking to Steve Parton once he told me a cheap fuji reel seat for 5 was the most reliable and functional seat on the market, problem is they are just not sexy enough for most folk these days.
Thinking of making 2 rods I don't need this winter.

It's not daft at all, codyarrow. I altered a s-h to a d-h this year for under 20 in parts - and then caught a good fish on it. It was an exercise and worth the doing at minimal cost.

It would help if you gave links to the cork so we could try and judge the quality. One bit I bought from China looks like cork for all the world - but in fact it's some rubberized stuff, not cork at all. Still, does the job fine and was only 4.
I agree, for functionality Fuji seats are hard to fault - but pretty they ain't!
I picked up a custom rod a couple of years back on eBay with a Fuji seat, turned out it was a trial blank knocked up for a competition angler - no point wasting good money on fripperies like burl wood and nickel silver on a test rod, stick a Fuji on! I never did learn what the blank is but, man, it's fast!

Lots of different combinations of offers. Cork looks a bit cheap? But 2 reel seats for 14. EVA versions available.

Looks similar cork & seat but almost half the price.
The Fuji-esque seats are OK if you're adding a fighting butt/rear handle but if not you'll maybe want to source a butt cap to fit. That may be easy enough but p&p on wee bits like that and winding checks soon adds up when bought separately.

Personally, yes, much better-looking cork on your last link - and there's a butt cap and w/c, too!

It annoys me that Guidesnblanks/Hopkins& Holloway will only despatch with recorded delivery no matter how trivial the part.

Still waiting on delivery. Was tempted by a 9ft 5wt blank from china for about 31 delivered, but ended up going with an xl50 10ft 5wt. Which was more expensive but comes with a bit of assurance on replacement sections. Might still get a 9ft 6wt from China - when they have finished celebrating.
