You can also get TF on a similar basis....

Personally I doubt it's anything to do with a border issue, last month we had Cap'n Col and Stan Headley featuring the far north, this month "How to fish the Dee" is on the front page.....etc
Tesco has reached the dizzy heights of Kirkwall on Orkney and you pass one outside of Wick on the way up to the ferry, Oh! there's also a Lidl in Kirkwall easker1

Aye, if there are any 2 places that you don't need a choice of 10 carp magazines, it's Orkney and Wick.

Yeh - this came up when we had the previous thread on the subject - some branches of the big 4 do stock T&S. I think the branch manager has some ability to over-ride head office dictate if he sees the sense in it - just that not many do.

Problem we have here is, although you can easily find many on display, the articles are just repeats of repeats, of repeats, of .... And most of these will be one, the odd off two, pages with a full page photo of the writer dragging in some fish.

I have several issues (one of the most popular here in the PNW) and you can't tell the old issue (1993 ... I kid you not) from the latest issue. Why buy what you've already got in the bathroom? Perhaps a bit more interesting, and I can follow the reasoning, is several are now 'on line' only aka 'E-zines.'

TV programing?

Same old - same old but 95% will be warm water fishing 'weather' it be salt or fresh. Again, why bother to tune in?

I know what you mean, Fred. I must have read that at least five hundred times on Internet forums.

It's an odd thing, generally supermarkets are red hot on making sure that every item in every store store has a good sales reason for being there. It seems weird that they'd stock non-selling anything.

They're actually not, they have a policy which is flawed, they remove items that aren't the most popular, that perhaps don't sell well, or have a fast turnaround.

What they tend to forget is, if potential cusomers can't get that item, they will go elsewhere, and while they are elsewhere they will also buy the other daily items, such as milk bread rolls cigarettes food cosmetics daily papers etc...

They lose more than they realise, i know because i stopped using my local supermarket for such reasons, as have others i've spoken to.

Best regards

Now I am wondering if Orkney has a clandestine brotherhood of carp anglers? Maybe they meet-up to plot the replacement of the trout in Loch of Clumly with a bunch of 40 lb mirrors? Perhaps the people of Wick are up to something similar, with plans to turn Toftingall into a carp fishery? We need to get Hugo Ross onto this...

I often shop at Morrisons Hunters Tryst, whilst visiting my elderly parents in Edinburgh.

It used to frustrate me, the fact that they used to only stock Coarse/Carp Magazines, so I wrote to them in Feb 2014, explaining that game fishing magazines (I gave them the titles) would be better suited in this neck of the woods.

I received a total gobbledegook reply, which made no sense whatsoever. Below is part of my reply.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply,

You say that the selection of magazines is determined by the sales of each title consequently changes monthly.

This, I can understand, would be logical practice if you were selling a particular brand of a tin of bean. I doubt very much if the Scottish palate would vary much from the English. But in this case we are talking about the location of different species of fish in the U.K.

From what you say, you are obviously basing your selection of mags on total U.K. figures, and not Scottish. Furthermore, if you do not stock Game magazines, then your figures will be even more distorted. -----------
---------------------------

I can now say, nearly three years on that Morrisons Hunters Tryst, do now stock Game magazines, along with an abundance of Coarse/Carp mags. So I Suppose that this is a modicum of success in the right direction.

Whenever I go into a new supermarket, anywhere in Scotland, it never ceases to amaze me the stocking policy of coarse/carp magazines, in areas were you would have to travel several hundred miles to find a coarse fishery.

There you go. I give up, it has been going on for years now.

Douglas

Magazine and newspaper distribution still works to the news agent system, their normal sales are traditionally behind the counter pre-orders, publishers put out more to introduce browsers to order or buy, its their way of advertising.
