Thumbs up About time.

Had a nice Salmon today.About 5lb ,caught on a sz 8 yellow flamethrower double, as the water was a bit peaty.I had 1 other draw but no contact.

Well done Jim - a lovely bright fish.

I've found it a tough season so far with just 3 salmon for quite a lot of effort. Several salmon frustratingly lost after the briefest contact, so I can hardly claim I "played" them but at least they came to my flies.

Two of the latter were to streamer patterns stripped fast (from upstream) on my switch rod which shows salmon do like a different stimulus to just the down and across 'swinging" the fly at times, as exponents of the fast Sunray know so well. But no luck attracting a salmon to riffled and floating presentations so far.

What has been so disappointing is the lack of salmon in what seemed to be very propitious conditions. This is particularly true of the Ribble for me, which has me wondering just how much damage was done to redds and parr stocks by the terrible floods two years ago

But as many of my non-retired fishing mates say "a bad day's fishing is still a lot better than a good day at work!"

I had my first salmon of season yesterday. It was a lovely fresh 8lb hen fish. Took 20 minutes to land and was returned quickly and strongly after a few pictures.

I knew the fish was there having seen it arrive in the pool and splash towards a known lie.

Having drifted shrimp patterns over its nose several times I switched to a Sun Ray Shadow and stripped it back over its head. The fish just about ripped my arm off for it. Awesome experience.
