    Default Spey set up?

Hi guys, I have decided to take the plunge in to the world of spey casting for salmon after 35 yrs coarse and sea angling. So far I have a vintage Daiwa graphite coil 13ft 9-10wt,with a Daiwa Lochmor reel.I am looking to use a floating line .Please advise on suitable matched set ups down to the very teaser! Many thanks in advance.

    1. Buy a Snowbee 1D floating line # 9/10
    2. Book a couple of lessons with an instructor
    3. Practice what your instructor tells you
    4. Disregard everything else until you can consistantly cast and turnover 20-25 yards with that set up....

...then you will have a basic level of technical competency that can be adapted in all sorts of ways, and lets the hard part begin.

    Good luck

As said before, go book some lessons with a qualified instructor, he/she will have the correct gear probably from different manufacturers, then you will get a solid grounding in how to spey cast and try the matched/balanced gear before you commit hard earned cash to a buy. Thereafter its practise and more practise. Catch an instructor in the closed season, you may be able to talk a good deal....the money will be well spent.

For all things 'spey' this is the dedicated board:

Spey Pages - Powered by vBulletin

Lots of UK (and Europe) folks on the board so you may well recognize some of the poster names. Newbies are treated with great respect so no worries about getting flamed ... we were all a 'Newbie' at some point. I get to be a 'Newbie' in a couple of days ...

Stack of rod tubes here in my office, looking for some thing ... and 'This one is heavy??!' Brand new, never been lined 5/6 TFO spey rod!! More digging! AH HA! A reel loaded with a 5/6 spey line and leader. Time to get off my butt and go chase a Summer Run Steelhead!

Thanks all for the replies.Well the Lochmor reel has arrived and has left me a trite confused!!!Turning the handle anti clockwise (away from oneself) gives line, one has to reel "backwards" to gain line?Is this how spey reels are set up?Awaiting helpful replies!

Hi, longchamp. It sounds to me like you need to alter the reel from left hand wind to right hand wind - or vice versa.
I don't know your reel but having changed the wind direction you may need to strip all the line and backing off and then reel it back on 'the right way'. You want the line to run off the spool and up through the rod eyes from the bottom of the reel, not the top.

Let's start at the beginning .... Which hand do you use to wind in? There's no right or wrong, just what feels natural to you.

If you got any paperwork with your reel that will probably give instructions on changing the retrieve - it'll not be hard, I shouldn't think.
If not, see if there's a video on YouTube re: your reel.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Coming off a long physical illness, lasted less than five minutes. Legs wobbling under me, 'get out of the river before you fall into the darned thing.'
