Default Can it get worse

"125,000 infected fish turned into liquid fertiliser" WTF I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

125,000 salmon die in disease outbreak at Lewis fish farms - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-41689173

Dead link there for some reason JP, this works

Talk about unsustainable. I'd imagine quite a few anglers will be tempted to pick up a corpse or three for redistribution

You would think so from a business point of view but somehow they sustain these losses year on year without going bust

An interesting theory from the link...

One theory behind the emergence of the disease is that climate change and rising ocean temperatures could be making Scottish fish farms more vulnerable to bacterial infections.

However more likely is massive overstocking of the cages in a blind stupid attempt to cover the losses they know are coming from disease (or storm and seal damage).

Yes it can! Deseased salmon as fertiliser, is there a chance that the disease could end up in the rivers due to agricultural runoff?

My thoughts too along with rancid fish liquid leaching from the trucks traveling to the central belt...

Minimising loss, they’ll obviously be charging a lot for “natural” fertiliser. Profit before anything else of course😑

I could be wrong but I think the fish farms have to pay someone to take the stinking mess away.

I didn’t think of that bob. So, you think it’s not the fish farms themselves making the fertiliser? Ah I see now bob; just read the article

I would have thought dead fish from a fish farm are an Class 2 Animal by Product and so have to be disposed accordingly.

It's my understanding the dead fish can't just be spread on land they would have to go through a process which supposedly makes the final material "safe"

Not sure of the law in Scotland though...but as it's European Legislation it must apply

I would be more concerned with infection reaching wild fish in the loch, and spreading from there, the symtoms are unlikely to be spotted in the wild population.
