I spotted this: "As an aside someone mentioned that on the tonight's programme regarding the Wye on BBC 1 where someone was casting at a shoal of shad and catching one. Well the sequence was obviously filmed at the Hierag (Hell hole) on Marsh Smiths beat at Gromaine. Doesn't take much intelligence to guess who was guiding him does it! There again normal rules of behaviour, decency or normality don't apply to the chosen one apparently. It never did and I suspect it never will. Looks like I might have to reveal what I know sooner rather than later."

The usual trademark spelling mistakes.......its ' Heirag and Gromain' BTW but what I object to is the deceitful declaration that I was there. I was in Scotland (Tay) and had no idea the film was being made at there until a week or so later

It clearly does take a lot more intelligence than available to make such a guess as the guess was wholly wrong. I don't want to give unnecessary oxygen to the post but this was the type of thing that got him banned and why he should stay that way. This is not free speech.

Does the WUF have a say in bait restrictions on the beats they let? Even if legal might they continue the shrimp ban on those beats?

Smaller than 7mm gape, about size 12. They are intent in getting a pan-Wales set of bylaws and have resisted all pressure for a case by case approach so what goes everywhere else in Wales will apply to the Wye. Of course, if individual beats want continue with a ban on shrimp (or anything) it's up to them.

This actually might be their undoing as it is possible that the imposition of pan-Wales bylaws might be illegal and prompt a judicial review.

About 2/3rds of the almost 600 responses came from North Wales.

Be interesting to see how they police this , Ive seen one set of bailiffs in the last 10 years , checked licenses and moved on , I understand you self regulate as an angler but poachers keep poaching nothing has stopped them doing that in broad daylight , poor Simon is going to have to restock on size 12’s instead of the 8’s

Ian
Ian: Owners choose what they want but we do try and encourage 'best practice' I banned worm shrimp and prawn in 1988 and introduced full C&R I have since added single hook FCs and encouraged fly fishing all year with some success. Wyesham has put in 'fly only' at certain heights. These beats would ban shrimp I expect.

However if NRW are planning to reintroduce shrimp to the Wye and Usk (no baits after 15th Sept currently) they will have to do an assessment appropriate to them being SAC rivers

Well that's not how I read it at all. I thought that WUF staff guided on those beats, not you personally. You are surely too important to do a menial task like that - so perhaps it's just a misunderstanding, making your accusations misplaced. So who was guiding the BBC that day Stephen?

The NRW have 16 enforcement officers for the whole of Wales and they're not fully employed on patrolling river and lakes.

Thank you for accepting that it wasn't me: I was on the Tay that week, its that simple. Nothing to do with too menial: I did ghillie for an autumn salmon fishing scene later in the programme but I don't know if it is in the final cut. If you want to know who was there ask WUF and I will warn them of the arrival of the Spanish Inquisition!

Having not seen the offending BBC Wales programme could somebody tell me if the problem which is festering away under the surface is that the fisherman was actually knowingly casting at{and catching?} shad. If that's the case surely someone should have been there to look after New Kid's interests while he was away especially as he tells us he didn't even know that the BBC were making a feature on his own beat. Do the BBC just turn up and do as they please in this day and age. In this era of mobile phones didn't anyone think to contact you New Kid.
