Default Best places in UK/ireland for guided salmon fishing?

With a big birthday coming up my wife has suggested booking in somewhere for a fishing experience and so for me it has to be seatrout and salmon but in the UK or Ireland (due to cost of going abroad). Most probably next year as most of my holiday has now been booked for this year.

Where would you recommend as something to be able to look back on as more than just another fishing trip and with the bets chance of actually finding some silver - preferably on the fly?

I've posted the same in the Sea trout forum as that's another specied option and so if you do both feel free to just post here.

    Thanks,

    Iain

The four 'great' salmon rivers of Scotland. Plus maybe the Thurso and certainly the rather inaccessible Helmsdale.

My choice would be the Spey at Tulchan. But don't stay at the lodge, it is horrendously expensive.

This is a few miles from my house here in Southern Ireland ( which is actually ABROAD for you )- there are some lovely beats here and the fishery manager, Paul Whelan, is a top bloke. If interested , send him an email to discuss best times /availability etc.
There's some decent WBT fishing too.

Thanks guys, I have to say I like the look of the Fortwilliam fishery which could be combined with a bit of Irish bassing on the copper coast. Definitely one I'll be passing onto my wife.

Sadly I'm not sure about the Scottish rivers given the very low catch returns or I'd have jumped on them especially as the Uncle that introduced me to fly fishing had a beat on the Tay. Sadly he's given up partly due to age but also due to the low catch rates.

There is'nt a drop of water in the far north as yet, so probably not one for the next few weeks anyway.

Also, have a look at our great Inland Fisheries Ireland website. Everything about fishing is linked from this page

    Hi Iain,
If you like your bass, seatrout and salmon you could always look into Co.Cork. My local rivers the Bandon and Argideen are good for salmon and seatrout, bass everywhere, also brownies. Not too expensive either! Just fly fish for bass after dark, nearly guaranteed big fish!

Sorry I've only just seen this thread but I agree with Mackila1 that Fortwilliam is a great beat and Paul Whelan is the goto man. Chris Cody the Ghillie there is the man I would recommend to guide you.

You could also try Glenda Powell at the Blackwater and Connie Corcoran (the River Man), both have nice stretches of water and are great guides.

It's not to far to Youghal for the bass

Oh and I would recommend staying with Joe at the Ballyrafter Hotel, a great old fishing hotel overlooking Lismore Castle
