    Default Budget end Salmon reel?

    I need a new reel for a #7 switch line and ideally 200 yards of backing. I’d like to stay under £100 as I can’t justify much more at this time.

    Does anyone have exierience with the Vision Deep or Shakespeare Oracle? Any other thoughts?

    It’s to go on an 11’6” Orvis Clearwater Switch rod.

    Hi Iain you can get the airflo switch reel black for £53 with 5 v spools and bag.
    I can put over 100 yards under a 9wt line

    Thanks Al. I was a little worried that at that price the clutch would be suspect. Is it one that you would recommend after a period of use? If so I’ll happily get one, thanks

    I can't recommend it personally Iain as I only got my one last week, i asked the forums opinion on them, here is the replies.
    Anyone used a airflo switch reel

    Thanks again Al. I think that seals it as I’d far rather go for something with recommendations than rely on advertising blurb

    If I was looking for a cheapie reel I'd go for a Chinese import - the Maxcatch reels are developing a good reputation though I've never used them. They have a few models

    For example

    Maxcatch Avid Fly Reel with CNC-machined Aluminum Alloy Body fly fishing reel 1/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 9/10wt (Sliver, Black, Green, Blue): Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

    You can get them even cheaper if you go direct.

    Many moons ago I went down the same path as you on this Iain, I bought myself a Ron Thompson composite reel with a sealed drag, paid around the £20 mark. Surprisingly I still get to use it on my double-handers & so far, it hasn't let me down. Handled salmon to just over 13lb.

    I have the Oracle reel which I got as part of a deal when buying a Shakey double hander.. It seems fine to me although I haven't tested it with anything big yet.

    Theres a PM for you ian re a Marquis 8/9 on evilbay possibly going for peanuts .
    Not modern not Hit ec but will handle almost any fish that swims around our rivers !
