Default Just your average cormorants stomach contents

32 salmon smolts taken from a single cormorant, I believe this is in Ireland and looks like a genuine image.

And we wonder why our fish stocks are being decimated!

My mate took this photo a couple of years ago, all from one cormorant on the Afon Cych

I regularly see them, sometimes three at a time. Add that to the sawbills and it amazes me anything's left.

When you take account of the fact that a brood of goosanders can number 12, eat possibly 10 juveniles each per day from April to August, that's roughly 160 days at 120 parr a day so getting on for 20,000 parr lost to one brood. The NRW need to get to grips with this instead of chucking £350k at the less than a dozen anglers in Wales keeping more than 3 salmon a season.
“There is no more lovely country than Monmouthshire in early spring. Nowhere do the larks sing quite so passionately, as if somehow inspired by the Welsh themselves. There is a blackbird on every thorn and a cock chaffinch, a twink as they call him there, on every bush...... It moved me profoundly. I had been spared to see another spring, and I thank God for it.”

Point taken about the consumption of parr, however those 3 salmon would produce more than the number taken by said birds.
Yes there is an issue with the fish eating birds, but hitting salmon on the head does not help either.

You’d also need to chap a hell of a lot of fish to have the same effect FEBs do.

They shouldn’t be on any of our rivers end of.

Quite correct, just over 90% of Welsh Dee salmon were returned last season and my club managed 100% so we're not exactly slaughtering them!

My point was that the Welsh authorities were willing to spend £350,000 to criminalise a very small number of anglers keeping too many fish but refuse to address the much bigger FEB problem. It's generally accepted that more adult fish on the redds is not the key, it's the number of smolts getting to sea.

Three adult salmon would produce about 13,500 extra eggs, assuming 50% were hens averaging 10lbs. With a survival rate to smolts of a generous 5% this would be 675 smolts. A single brood of goosanders could consume the lot in a week!! I think this demonstrates that although obviously it's better to return the three fish, it's not the problem.

In 2017 about 450 salmon were killed in Wales, if returned they would potentially produce 100,000 smolts. When you consider that there might be 1,000 broods of goosanders in Wales eating that many in a single day plus what the cormorants get, it doesn't take a genius to see which is the key problem.
