Default Cardrona beats on the Tweed

    Hi,

A mate is suggesting we go up to Cardrona for a couple of days late October looking for Salar on the fly but looking at the returns via FishPal the catches this last couple of years have been less than exciting at 8 last year and 11 in 2017 for £75/day.

Does anyone have any "hands on" experience and wise words regarding these fishings?

    Thanks

I fished Cardrona 2/3 times in October 2017 i never caught anything but there was plenty fish moving each time I was there.
I also fished it in October 2018 a couple of chaps I was talking to had fish that week but again I didn't catch anything, it is a lovely bit of water to fish.
Ime fishpal doesn't necessarily reflect how well a river is fishing.

I haven't fished the Cardrona beat for salmon but Al is right , there is some nice water. I would say that the recent catches fairly reflect the dramatic reduction in Autumn run the Tweed has seen over the past few seasons. I have fished the upper river for over 30 years and it is as poor as I ever recall. I now catch more fish in September than Oct/Nover combined. But even these fish are old, coloured fish. It must be getting on for 10years since I landed a genuine, clean silver autumn fish on the upper Tweed. They used to be common right into November.

Only you can decide if the fishing represents value for time and money. The fishing in the borders in Autumn can still be a pleasant experience.

Every time I read reports like above my heart sinks, salmon and sea trout are my favourite sport I've only fished full time for 5/6 years and know I'm to old at 50 for them to ever recover in my lifetime, oh boy do I wish I could turn the clock back to the good old days

Don't be so down. I landed my first sea trout in at least 5 years a couple of weeks ago on the middle tweed. A stunning 3lb'er on a wee PTN. Maybe things on the up?

Check out the Iain SB channel on YouTube , there’s plenty of GoPro footage ( I’m quite sure it’s Cardrona that he’s co-owner of on the tweed) .£75 a day on upper Tweed at what’s considered to be their prime time isn’t too bad.

Yes, Iain is one of the co-owners on Cardrona, along with myself and a few others and Cardrona features in his videos. Catches have dropped, consistent with trends across Scotland, UK and pretty much everywhere else. Still a good chance of fish in the autumn. Fishing effort is also lower than it used to be. There are sea trout throughout the beat just now, with a few salmon here and there. I have only fished once this year, last week, and saw a couple of fish in the tail of one of the pools. There are plenty of good value options on Upper Tweed just now.
