Default What to ask a fishing guide about?

The questions asked by anglers are often arranged in this order:

    1. The number of salmon in the river

    2. Presence of fresh salmon

    3. State of water

    4. Locations of salmon

    5. Effective flies

    6. Salmon activity

    7. Fishing techniques

    8. Tactical methods of fishing and tackle

    9. Fly presentation

How would you arrange these questions in the correct order?

In the UK it doesn't matter what you ask a guide as he will tell you want you want to hear.
A ghillie on the other hand is a much more honest person...

My order would be 5 and 7 straight away, followed by 8 and 9, then 3, 4 and 6. 1 and 2 would be pretty much a guess unless it is a stocked river, but let it come up in general conversation.

I suspect that might be one area where they might suddenly become less ar2e licky
They tend to be more expensive than ghillies anyway...

Just to reinforce this is from a UK perspective of guides and is no way a slight on Jeorge in the USSR - cracking fish and river there

    Very nice pictures George,
However as I'm from Yorkshire my first question to ask a guide would be, "How Much"....
There are two basic fly designs, those designed to catch fish and those designed to catch fishermen, the latter being the best seller

If it's a beat I don't know the most important information for me is to find out where the taking lies are for the prevailing conditions. Then I want to know what flies / tactics have been used. It's quite handy to get an overview of the beat, how many pools, boundaries, other rods etc too.
