Default Frustrating Mullet!

Just a few days left of my hols here in Ireland and I've still not managed a mullet. Found a wee lagoon that is stuffed full of them. They obviously feed hard when the tide provides a flow but they are there all day round even at low water. They are in easy casting reach, don't seem to get too spooked and won't take any fly that I've thrown at them That is not strictly true - I've had three takes and briefly connected with one fish. Not sure what has done the damage - probably and Algae fly or maybe a wee shrimp imitation.

A local guy has suggested maggot fly or balck dries but they have not worked for me. I've kicked around the sea weed on the shore and not seen any maggots but there are plenty of shrimp.

Today I took a half baguette with me and tried a bread fly. It seemed pointless though, as I did not see any of the mullet touch the bread.

I know my experiance is not unusal when it comes to mullet, but if any one has any ideas about how to catch a Mullet and on what fly, then post away...

Thanks

Norm

A diawl bach seems to be worth a throw.
Good luck with this

If they are feeding on shrimp then try a salmon shrimp fly (right in picture)instead of a standard shrimp pattern (left in picture). They have had better takes when the mullet are on the shrimp.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Soldier Palmer will be able to answer your Mullet questions.
He regularly catching sizeable fish but I'm not sure if he can post on any public forums as he writes for Flyfishing&Flytying mag.
Cheers
Simon

Norm,

I get them to take bread in some locations and not in others.

Two locations, just a couple of miles apart. Both loaded with mullet. Location 1 not a bit of interest. Location two, they devoured bread and took my bread fly.

I still couldn't hook the swine. I will likely be bald next time we meet

Alex

The issue of Fly Fishing & Fly Tying due to appear in the shops in mid-September features multiple reports of mullet captures and provides details of the flies which achieved consitant success. As maharg stated 'a Diawl bach is worth a throw'. Has to be the correct pattern though. Full tying details for this and two other 'bankers' in the mag and the method for fishing them.
Here's a wee taster.
