Thanks for the useful tip on lining the spool with mono before loading the braid.

I'd never considered the possibility of braid/gelspun being burned when tying a bimini, nor was I familiar with a spider hitch. I see that netknots recommend 15 turns for braid.

BHP certainly is heavy duty stuff!

Really I guess does depend on a join we trust as individuals.Have never experienced the spool slippage problem using braid but have seen it happen on a ''coffee grinder''(fixed spool) reel.In more recent years I have joined a length of quality mono to the spectra backing using an FG knot. This is a very strong and streamlined join and the mono is more sympathetic to a welded fly line loop.Have to remember we can only put so much pressure on big fish with a fly rod even a 14wt and it is really not much even straight up and down.Folks are using some of these joins with plenty of drag pressure on non fly set ups designed for the job.It is easy to get carried away with all this.Fit for purpose is the key and keeping it simple.Spectra braid just gave us the opportunity to upgrade the backing capacity on manageable in your hands outfits and with it evolved the proven methods of joining it to flylines and mono sometimes under serious pressure from big pelagic missiles with fins.
